The university's Ellucian Banner ERP system, running on aging on-premises Oracle infrastructure, had become a critical bottleneck. Registration periods saw system response times degrade to over 10 seconds per transaction, causing student frustration, help desk overload, and enrollment processing backlogs that cascaded into financial aid disbursement delays.
The Banner environment included over 15 years of customizations, integrations with more than 40 third-party systems, and complex batch processing workflows for financial aid, student accounts, and academic records. Previous modernization attempts had stalled due to the perceived risk of disrupting these interconnected systems during the academic year.
The university also faced pressure from institutional leadership to reduce IT infrastructure costs while improving the digital experience for students and faculty. The existing Oracle database was running on an unsupported version, creating both security risks and technical limitations that prevented the adoption of newer Banner features.
Tharseo IT designed a phased modernization approach that minimized risk while delivering rapid performance improvements. Phase one focused on migrating the Banner Oracle database to Oracle Exadata Cloud Service on OCI, using Oracle Data Guard for real-time replication that enabled a cutover with zero data loss and minimal maintenance window.
Phase two addressed the application tier, containerizing the Banner application servers using Oracle Kubernetes Engine with auto-scaling policies tuned to handle registration surge periods. We implemented Oracle API Gateway to modernize the integration layer, replacing fragile point-to-point connections with a managed API platform that simplified connectivity with the university's 40+ integrated systems.
Phase three optimized the database layer with Oracle Autonomous Database capabilities, implementing automated indexing, SQL tuning, and workload management. We redesigned the batch processing architecture to leverage parallel execution and OCI's elastic compute, converting overnight batch windows into near-real-time processing. Throughout all phases, we maintained a parallel environment that allowed instant rollback, ensuring zero risk to academic operations.
The modernized Banner environment delivered transformative performance improvements. Registration transaction times dropped from over 10 seconds to under 1 second, a 60% improvement that eliminated student complaints and help desk tickets related to system performance. Batch processing cycles that previously ran for 8 hours overnight now complete in under 90 minutes, enabling same-day financial aid processing.
The university achieved 3x overall system performance with zero data loss during the entire modernization project. The new auto-scaling architecture handled a record 50,000+ concurrent users during fall registration without any performance degradation, compared to the previous system's 5,000-user practical limit.
